The Fairbanks Ice Dogs have been a cornerstone of Alaskan hockey since their inception in 1997. Originally formed as a Tier III Junior B team, they've steadily climbed the ranks, joining the North American Hockey League in 2003. Known for their tenacity and skill, the Ice Dogs have built a strong reputation as a competitive force in junior hockey. Their dedication to developing young talent has resulted in numerous players advancing to top collegiate and professional hockey programs. With a rich history marked by playoff appearances and multiple championships, the Ice Dogs continue to be a beloved franchise in Fairbanks and a formidable opponent on the ice.
The NAHL Celebrating its 50th season in 2024-25, the NAHL, the only USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier II Junior league boasting 35 teams teams in 20 states from across North America. The NAHL is part of the USA Hockey National Junior Development Model, which includes the USHL and the US National Team Development Program. The NAHL works closely with NCAA College Hockey, the NHL, the USHL, and USA Hockey's National Development Program in order best serve as an imperative piece in the development system for collegiate and professional hockey.
The Fairbanks Ice Dogs forged an unexpected bond with the Marshall, Minnesota community during the tumultuous 2020-2021 season. With the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting normal operations, the team made the difficult decision to relocate temporarily to Marshall. The Red Baron Arena became their home ice, and the city embraced the Ice Dogs with open arms. This unexpected partnership not only allowed the team to continue their season but also created a lasting connection with the Marshall community, fostering a shared love of hockey and building a foundation for future visits.
