DESCRIPTION:Pioneer PBS and Southwest Minnesota State University will be co-hosting a screening of “Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death” at SMSU on Wednesday\, May 10 at 5 p.m. SMSU is located at 1501 State St. in Marshall and the event will take place at the Conference Center’s Upper Ballroom located on the south side of campus. The event is free and open to the public. \nThis half-hour documentary takes viewers on a breathtaking trip to Reykjavik\, Iceland. The film centers around a project led by Dr. Daniel Rieppel\, professor of music at SMSU\, to pair the work of one of Minnesota’s most iconic poets and essayists\, the late Bill Holm\, to music. The film concludes with a performance where Holm’s epic poem cycle\, “Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death\,” is set to music composed by Martha Helen Schmidt and sung by Southwest Minnesota State University graduate and opera singer Ryan Hugh Ross. \nThe event will include a screening of “Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death” along with a panel discussion with the filmmakers and Dr. Rieppel. Concerts are free of charge\, all local and area residents\, as well as visitors are welcome. Benches for seating are available\, yet you may also bring your own lawn chairs and/or blankets. This is a family friendly event for all ages that builds awareness for dementia\, learn more about services offered in Marshall area\, and honors and remembers those affected by dementia. There will be games for all ages\, prizes\, music\, Marshall Area Storytellers\, and food available for purchase. \n \n**Wear purple!** \nThere will be a 5k Run for Memories. The race will begin at Red Baron Arena & Expo at 6:00 PM. It’s guaranteed to be a great time. \nTo Register for 5K sign up at: https://runsignup.com/Race/MN/Marshall/RunforMemories\nIMPORTANT INFORMATION:Early Bird Price until May 31st: $25 Price starting June 1st: $35 \n* Race Packet pick up will be available starting at 4:00 p.m. the day of the race at Red Baron Arena & Expo.\n* There are T-shirts or bags for those who registered before the May 31st deadline. \n*The Run for Memories 5K begins at 6:00 PM. Please plan to line up for this race around 5:50 PM.\nPlease note: The streets are not closed; be aware of your surroundings at all times and stay on the left side of the road for the majority of the race. Walkers\, strollers\, and dogs on leashes are welcome. If you plan to walk the race\, please be courteous of your fellow participants and line up near the back of the chute.
