DESCRIPTION: Celebration of International Cultures and Local Diversity through Education\, Food\, Arts\, and Cultural Performances \n  \nIn 2022\, SMSU partnered with Visit Marshall and the City of Marshall to launch a new event that built on the 30-year tradition of International Food\, Entertainment\, and Education at SMSU. The first WorldFest in 2022 was an overwhelming success drawing over 1\,000 attendees to a full day of ethnic food\, cultural performances\, and global experiences. The event brought together the SMSU community with Marshall and regional residents in a celebration of the many cultures in southwest Minnesota. WorldFest is the area’s biggest global celebration of the year. WorldFest 2023 is poised to eclipse the success of 2022 with even more food options\, performers\, and expo booths to introduce participants to new countries\, cultures\, and members of our community. \nWe are proud that WorldFest is an inclusive and welcoming celebration of world and local cultures and diversity.

DESCRIPTION:Pioneer PBS and Southwest Minnesota State University will be co-hosting a screening of “Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death” at SMSU on Wednesday\, May 10 at 5 p.m. SMSU is located at 1501 State St. in Marshall and the event will take place at the Conference Center’s Upper Ballroom located on the south side of campus. The event is free and open to the public. \nThis half-hour documentary takes viewers on a breathtaking trip to Reykjavik\, Iceland. The film centers around a project led by Dr. Daniel Rieppel\, professor of music at SMSU\, to pair the work of one of Minnesota’s most iconic poets and essayists\, the late Bill Holm\, to music. The film concludes with a performance where Holm’s epic poem cycle\, “Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death\,” is set to music composed by Martha Helen Schmidt and sung by Southwest Minnesota State University graduate and opera singer Ryan Hugh Ross. \nThe event will include a screening of “Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death” along with a panel discussion with the filmmakers and Dr. Rieppel.
