A stop in Lyon County History
"Making Lyon County Home" - sure sounds cozy and inviting doesn't it? The second floor exhibit gallery at the Lyon County Historical Society just opened and most certainly needs to be on your must-see list!
As you walk up the steps, you are surrounded by photos of rural Lyon County homes, farming and a video of Newspaper headings from the 1940's. Take a step further and you will arrive at the front door of a 1940's home which is the entrance to the entire interactive exhibit. The blush pink kitchen has drawers, cupboards and refrigerator that open up to small vignettes of utensils, cookbooks and even Schwan's milk bottles. Your kiddos will love the Lyndwood Lounge that has a live (interactive) karaoke bar to sing some tunes! Each area of the exhibit has interactive items that tell about everything from how windy Lyon County is, to its history of flooding, and the amazing businesses started in the area.
Besides the new floor, there are also 2 others housing interesting artifacts from different times. Stop down to the basement to see the log cabin and covered wagon fully equipped with everything needed on the prairie! On the main floor enjoy a scoop of Schwan's Ice Cream or a soda in the parlor. Before leaving stop by the gift shop for books by local authors, small toys for the kids, and a fun Minnesota Hotdish pan!
We invite you to visit the "Making Lyon County Home" for an afternoon of history and fun at the Lyon County Historical Society museum. Show the kids what a mid-century home looked like, or giggle with your girlfriends over fashions from the past. No matter what you are visiting for, add this stop to your must-do list!
